University of Padova

The University of Padova ranks among the three top Italian universities in the field “Biological sciences”. The Department of Histology, Microbiology and Medical Biotechnologies is located in the “Complesso Pluridipartimentale A. Vallisneri”.

This building houses four departments devoted to basic and preclinical research in the fields of bioscience and biomedicine. The “Complesso Pluridipartimentale A. Vallisneri” has the largest mouse facility of the University and a number of other facilities, including a centre for advanced biotechnology and bioinformatics, plus lecture halls, laboratories and libraries.

Our team has been pioneering mouse transgenesis since 1993. Our team has a long-standing expertise in the production of transgenic mice by different means, including gene knockout, DNA microinjection and lentiviral-mediated transgenesis, and in the manipulation, pathophysiological and molecular characterization of mouse models for neuromuscular disorders. Our main fields of interest include the characterization of the role of extracellular matrix components in tissue homeostasis, and the generation and phenotypic characterization of mouse models for human disorders.

University of Padova and BIO-NMD

University of Padova is the leader of WP5 -Biomarker discovery and validation on animal models. The main tasks of WP5 are the analysis, validation and therapeutic exploitation of biomarkers in animal models.

The team has broad and well-proven expertise in studies in mice with a strong background on mouse models for collagen 6 myopathies. Their main tasks will be the analysis, validation and therapeutic exploitation of biomarkers in animal models.

The University of Padova will also be involved in other work packages as a partner.

Paolo Bonaldo

Paolo Bonaldo is a full Professor of Cell Biology at the School of Medicine, University of Padova. He has authored 63 publications in major journals including Nature Genetics, PNAS and Cell. He is coordinator of the PhD Programme on Genetics and Molecular Biology at the University of Padova. Professor Bonaldo is the co-inventor of three patents. He has a long-standing interest in the molecular biology of extracellular matrix and in animal models for human neuromuscular disorders.
